From the river, busy with boats, the walk also enjoys the abundant birdlife at the Spade Oak Lake. You will also be rewarded with panoramic views of the Thames Valley, well managed woodland and fascinating archaeology. The Scenic Route takes you from picturesque Goring up into the Chiltern Hills. You will pass through beech woodlands and through a chalk grassland nature reserve with panoramic views over the Thames Valley. The return leg to Goring is flat, along the River Thames. The walk is easy going, though you will need to cross the railway via a footbridge and navigate some hilly but beautiful sections at the start. The Flat route is shorter, avoids the hilly start but visits the main points of interest you would see on the Scenic Route. Goring is a small picturesque village at the foot of hills separated by the River Thames. There are several pubs serving food, restaurants, cafes, local shops, accommodation and a Youth Hostel. There is a regatta during the summer. Public toilets are located in Goring car park. There are no toilets or refreshments on the walks outside of the villages. If you are looking for a walk that combines wonderful views with a tranquil riverside stroll and distinctive historical points of interest then this is for you. The ‘River Wey and Godalming Navigations’ offers an insight into the industries that existed in the area during the last 400 years. This waterway was an important commercial transport route, connecting to the River Thames. Today, it offers a lovely setting for many leisure activities, such as walking, running, cycling, canoeing and boating. On occasion, you can also see barges being hauled along by a horse as they would have been in days gone by. Starting at the free car park for St Martha’s Hill, this 6 mile tour takes you through Chantry Wood, down to Shalford, along the River Wey to Guildford and then returns using the North Downs Way. There are three pubs marked on the route where you can stop off for refreshments. There is also parking at Shepherd’s Way in Guildford if that is a more convenient starting point.
